VGA_Less by Quantum Porcupine
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Graphics: 06 of 10 Why: Only bitmapped graphics is the porcupines
at the end. The other graphics look ok on
vga but on Tandy it's more like random colors.
Sound: 06 of 10 Why: I like Tran's music but I'm not sure how
much credit QP deserves for converting it
to adlib.
Programming: 06 of 10 Why: It's creative and all but it runs too slowly.
Extra: 07 of 10 Why: Supports native Tandy graphics, plus CGA and
VGA.
Notes and Comments:
This one is pretty good on my 386 with VGA but doesn't run too well on
my Tandy at 4.77 Mhz. I don't think this demo was made to run on such a slow
computer... After watching it for a few minutes, it was still on the rotating
circle with no other effects. The worst part of all is waiting for the screen
to clear after pressing ESC, which is painfully slow on the Tandy...
4.77Mhz by Joe Snow
Graphics: 03 of 10 Why: Hand-drawn computer looks good but what's the
deal with all of those game graphics?
Sound: 10 of 10 Why: Best sound by far. In stereo it was amazing.
Programming: 03 of 10 Why: Not much programming. Doesn't seem like a
typical demo; more like a slideshow at the
end
Extra: 08 of 10 Why: Tandy and VGA support plus Tandy sound.
Notes and Comments:
This demo wasn't very good overall, but I was impressed with the music,
which I got to listen to in stereo (which was a great idea, BTW, I would have
never though of it). The programming wasn't good, not enough REAL effects,
and I didn't like seeing all of those CGA game screens. What was the point
of those???
Graphics: 05 of 10 Why: Cool 4.77 Mhz man with his floppy...
Sound: 00 of 10 Why: No sound at all.
Programming: 05 of 10 Why: He seems proud that it runs at 9+ fps, but
that is too slow in my opinion.
Extra: 06 of 10 Why: He uses tweaked text mode in CGA/EGA/VGA to
achieve 160x100x16 graphics.
Notes and Comments:
This one seems to be the fastest of them all at the default 4.77 Mhz
speed but I wasn't impressed at all. So I wrote my own full-screen texture
mapper and it performs at 20+ fps at 4.77 Mhz. This demo needed more effects,
more optimization, and at least a little sound.
